Every year it can be a challenge to stay healthy during the holiday season. We are surrounded by so many temptations to indulge in unhealthy eating. It does not help when we find ourselves at business parties, church parties, and all of our friend and family gatherings where the tables are filled with fattening foods and of course all of the sugar. The good news is that there are some simple ways that we all can help keep ourselves healthier during this time.
Here are some ideas:
1.We can satisfy holiday cravings with healthier alternatives
With the season comes all your favorite holiday-flavored treats like peppermint, gingerbread, and pumpkin spice. But satisfying those cravings can mean a lot of extra sugar and fat. Instead, try looking for healthier recipes that fulfill those cravings without adding unnecessary sugar or fat to your diet. There are lots of healthier options out there that use alternative fats and natural sweeteners to replace the sugar. Use healthier flours as well that are non GMO and unbleached. There are lots of gluten free options for those who are gut sensitive and have allergies.
2. Use smaller plates and glasses. When we use large plates, we tend to indulge in larger portions to fill up the plate. Portion control is key! Also, when it comes to beverages, we all like a full glass, so skinnier glasses can help you manage how much liquid you’re drinking. Drinking lots of purified water (1/2 of your body weight in ounces) will also help with digestion, detox, keeping you well hydrated, and will help you feel better all the way around.
3. Make sure you plan ahead for holiday meals. If you know that you’re going to a big dinner during the weekend, plan your week so that you can treat it as a cheat day. Opt for some healthier food options before the day of the party or add to your weekly fitness routine. So when the big day comes and your family wants you to try every single dish on the table, you will not feel so guilty and your body will thank you for it.
4. Eat a little before a party. Helping to curb your appetite before a holiday party can help you avoid the temptation of holiday treats. It can be very simple choices such as a green salad, fresh fruit, or lean protein option before the party. These will help you make sure you’re not arriving feeling very hungry leading to loading up your plate.
5. Bring something healthy to your party. Everyone is going to be bringing fatty and sugary dishes, so why not be the person who breaks the trend? Try bringing a fruit salad, veggie platter, or healthy home-baked treats. Here is one recipe I love to make this time of year as a healthier sweet option: Protein Buckeyes- Mix 1 cup of organic peanut butter with 1/4 or 1/2 cup of raw local honey, and 1 cup non GMO plant based vanilla protein powder. ( I use Shaklee 180 Energizing Life Shake mix) Can go to www.shaklee.net/advantagehealth to find. Excellent protein for smoothies too as another option before a party. Mix all together. Roll into balls. I like to freeze up first before dipping them into melted semi-sweet chocolate chips. Dip the balls and then keep in the refrigerator. Enjoy!
Make sure to choose your treats wisely. You’re going to have plenty of opportunities to indulge during the holidays—and that’s okay! But if you do treat yourself, do it with something that’s worth the extra calories.
Have a healthy holiday season and Happy New Year!
